An ideal smile is hard to come by. Most people have minor imperfections that draw attention and detract from the overall beauty of the smile. One common complaint among Dr. Timothy Messer’s Memphis, TN, dental patients is gapped teeth. Gaps between the teeth throw off the balance of the smile and can make it look unhealthy.
There are several cosmetic dentistry treatments that enhance the appearance of the smile by addressing gaps, but one of the most popular is porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers conceal gaps and give patients teeth that look bright, white, straight, and even.
Because porcelain veneers are so versatile, they are an ideal treatment for many of our Memphis patients. If you are wondering if porcelain veneers are right for you, ask yourself these questions:
Anyone who answers “yes” to these questions can likely benefit from porcelain veneers. While porcelain veneers cannot repair structural damage or malocclusion problems, they can safely and effectively enhance the appearance of the smile for those with superficial blemishes.
Porcelain veneers treatment is typically completed over the span of two dental appointments. The first dental appointment is used to prep the teeth for porcelain veneers placement, as well as to design a set of veneers that will best complement the patient’s smile. The second dental appointment, which is scheduled a few weeks after the first, is used to bond the porcelain veneers to the patient’s teeth.
Porcelain veneers preparation involves the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel. Some of the natural tooth structure must be removed so that porcelain veneers sit flush with any untreated teeth and blend in seamlessly with the smile. Although we preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible, the teeth will be vulnerable after they have been altered, so porcelain veneers treatment is permanent.
When it comes to designing porcelain veneers, Dr. Messer takes the process very seriously. He will listen to the patient’s aesthetic goals and consider their current smile, as well as surrounding facial features. Dr. Messer makes design choices (including the size, shape, and color of veneers) that will enhance the smile without compromising its natural appearance.
Once porcelain veneers have been fabricated, they will be bonded to the teeth. Dr. Messer will slightly etch the teeth first to create a rough surface that more easily adheres to the dental compound. A thin layer of composite will be applied and the veneers will be put in place. To finalize the bonding process, we will use a dental light that hardens the compound. This creates a strong bond that can last upwards of 20 years.
Porcelain veneers offer our Memphis patients numerous benefits:
