How to Clean and Care for Your Invisalign® Aligners

Invisalign alignersInvisalign® is a metal-free, teeth straightening system that corrects the most common malocclusion problems, helping patients achieve a more attractive smile. Invisalign results are comparable to braces, but it provides many benefits that are not offered by traditional orthodontics. One great benefit of Invisalign is that the aligner trays are removable.

At Southwind Dental Care in Memphis, TN, Dr. Timothy Messer instructs patients on how to clean and care for Invisalign aligners to promote the success of treatment.

Remove Aligners When Eating

Even though Invisalign aligners are removable, they should be worn the majority of the time. Patients need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day so that the teeth and jaw receive the pressure they require to move into proper alignment.

However, patients should remove their aligners when eating or drinking. It is important to remove aligners when eating or drinking anything besides water so that food particles do not get trapped between the teeth and aligners. In addition, this prevents the aligners from getting dirty or becoming discolored or stained.

Keep Aligners Clean

Our Memphis patients must keep their aligners clean to eliminate harmful bacteria and prevent their aligners from becoming discolored or odorous. To keep the aligners clean, patients should rinse them every time they are removed.

The aligners should also be brushed at least once a day. They should be brushed with a soft toothbrush and a gentle cleaning solution.

Finally, we recommend that patients soak their aligners at least once a day in the Invisalign cleaning solution. If a patient does not have this special cleaning solution, they can wash aligners with clear, antibacterial soap.

Brush and Floss Regularly

Good oral hygiene habits are essential when cleaning and caring for your Invisalign aligners. Ideally, patients should brush after every meal. However, we understand that may not always be possible, so we advise patients to brush at least twice a day and rinse the mouth with water after every meal.

Invisalign patients should also floss at least once a day to remove trapped food particles and help in the prevention of plaque or tartar buildup.

Finally, patients should always clean the teeth before putting aligners in place, as this will help keep aligners clean.

Protect Aligners from Damage or Loss

Invisalign aligners make it more convenient to care for the teeth while undergoing teeth straightening treatment. However, since the aligners are removable, they can be lost or damaged. Our Memphis patients must be careful to protect their Invisalign aligners whenever they are out of the mouth. When aligners are removed, they should be immediately placed in a closed aligner case. A case prevents bacteria buildup, protects aligners from damage, and makes aligners more visible so they are not accidentally misplaced.
