Invisalign Treatment Timeline

Female patient wearing Invisalign trayIf you have crooked, overlapped, or gapped teeth, it can take away from the overall beauty of your smile. Fortunately, patients looking to straighten their teeth discreetly can undergo Invisalign® at our Memphis, TN practice.

This cosmetic dentistry treatment shifts the teeth into their proper positions without the use of metal braces. Here, our team at Southwind Dental Care discusses the Invisalign treatment timeline so our patients can know what to expect before, during, and after this treatment process.

A Brief Look at Invisalign

While traditional metal braces straighten the teeth using brackets, bands, and wires, Invisalign can shift the teeth with clear plastic trays. These removable aligners help gradually move the teeth over time.

Because they are virtually invisible, others will not be able to tell you are wearing an orthodontic appliance. Therefore, this option is popular among our teen and adult patients.

Invisalign Treatment Timeline

Invisalign treatment is different for each patient because everyone has his or her own set of specific needs. However, the treatment process follows a few general steps, which we will explore in more detail in the sections below.

Initial Consultation

Before you can begin Invisalign treatment, your dentist must see you for an evaluation. To determine your candidacy for this orthodontic option, he or she will assess the health of your teeth and gums, and take x-rays of the underlying root and jawbone.

Dental Impressions

If you are a candidate for Invisalign, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. This is typically completed with a digital handheld wand, although traditional dental putty may be used as well. The impressions will then be sent to the Invisalign dental lab.

Fabrication of Aligner Trays

Once the lab receives your dental impressions, a trained technician will begin designing your custom Invisalign trays. Working closely with your doctor, he or she will fabricate the trays according to your unique treatment plan.

Wearing Your Invisalign Trays

When your aligner trays are complete, they will be shipped to our office. We will then schedule you for another appointment. During this visit, your dentist will have you try on your trays and ensure they fit properly. You will then be given instructions for wearing the trays.

Keep in mind that your Invisalign trays must be worn a minimum of 22 hours daily to be effective. This means you should not remove them at all unless you are eating or cleaning your teeth. You will also be given instructions on how to properly clean and maintain your trays during treatment.

The length of treatment will be different for every patient. However, on average, Invisalign can achieve desired results in about 18 to 24 months.

Retention after Invisalign

Like traditional braces, you will need to wear a retainer after Invisalign treatment. This will prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original positions. There are several types of retainers available. Your dentist can help you choose an option that will work with your lifestyle.
