Treat Gapped Teeth to Enhance the Beauty of Your Smile

Patient having her teeth examinedAt-home oral hygiene habits are beneficial in a number of ways. By brushing and flossing regularly, patients can maintain good oral health and avoid a number of cosmetic blemishes, such as stained or discolored teeth. However, there are some flaws that cannot be avoided, no matter how strict a person is with their oral hygiene habits. The presence of gapped teeth is one of these conditions. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry treatments can enhance the beauty of the smile by addressing flaws, such as gapped teeth, that cannot be treated at home. Dr. Timothy Messer offers a number of treatments for gapped teeth to help our Memphis, TN patients improve the appearance of the smile and give the teeth a straighter, more uniform appearance.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a treatment that is commonly offered to patients who have unusually large gaps of space between the teeth. This is a great treatment for patients to consider because it is simple, effective, and affordable. This cosmetic treatment typically takes under an hour, and offers instant results. During treatment, Dr. Messer applies a bonding material to the surface of the teeth immediately adjacent to the gap. This material (which is colored to match the patient’s natural tooth color) is then shaped so that it fills in the gap of space, giving the teeth a naturally straight and even appearance. The only downside to dental bonding treatment is that results will not last forever. Patients should undergo treatment with the understanding that repeat treatment will likely be needed. However, with proper care, these results should last for a minimum of five years.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a more costly treatment option than dental bonding, and does require minimal alteration to the natural teeth. However, the benefits of porcelain veneers treatment is that it offers longer-lasting results, and can truly transform the smile. Aside from concealing dental gaps, porcelain veneers can improve the color of the teeth, and eliminate the appearance of chips, cracks, or other minor alignment problems. Porcelain veneers treatment typically takes place over a series of two appointments. At the first appointment, molds will be taken of the teeth, a small amount of tooth enamel will be removed to prepare the teeth for the veneers, and the design of the veneers will be planned. Porcelain veneers can be customized by shape, length, and color to give patients the most natural and beautiful looking smile. Once the veneers are complete, a second appointment will be scheduled so that the veneers can be bonded to the teeth.

Orthodontic Aligners

In many cases, gapped teeth are merely a cosmetic concern and do not pose a threat to the health of the teeth. However, in some cases gapped teeth are just a side effect of other, more serious alignment problems. If this is the case, orthodontic aligners may be the most appropriate treatment for gapped teeth. These aligners can gradually shift the teeth to address alignment issues and eliminate gapped teeth altogether. The benefit of orthodontic aligners is that they are much more comfortable, convenient, and discreet than traditional braces.
