Achieve a Flawless Smile: Porcelain Veneer Candidates

A woman with bright, white, evenly shaped teeth Whether chipped, discolored, or misshaped, when teeth look less than perfect they can be a source of embarrassment. With porcelain veneers, common dental imperfections can be masked to reveal a flawless smile. Memphis cosmetic dentist Timothy S. Messer provides this overview to help you learn more about porcelain veneers treatment and its candidates.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dentistry treatment used to improve the appearance of the teeth. Each porcelain veneer is a thin, custom-made, tooth-shaped shell. Veneers are crafted to the desired shape and color and fit over the front surface of the teeth to hide imperfections.

Once a patient's candidacy is determined, porcelain veneers treatment typically requires two dental appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth receiving treatment are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel. Next, impressions are made and the shade of the finished veneer will be decided. This information is then sent to a dental lab where the porcelain veneers are custom-crafted.

After about two to three weeks, the veneers will be completed and a dental appointment will be made to place the finished veneers. Before the veneers are placed, the teeth will be cleaned and a dental adhesive will be applied to the treated teeth. The veneers will then be attached to the teeth to complete treatment.

Porcelain Veneer Candidates

Though porcelain veneers treatment can be used to improve a number of dental issues, it is not suitable for everyone. Candidates for porcelain veneers must have relatively healthy gums and teeth and will need to undergo a thorough dental assessment. It is necessary for the dental enamel to be sufficiently intact since a thin layer must be removed to place the porcelain veneer. Teeth with major tooth decay, severe fractures, or large fillings are generally better suited for alternative treatments like porcelain crowns. Candidates for porcelain veneers include those with one or more of the following dental issues:

  • Dental discoloration: Yellowed, stained, discolored teeth can cause embarrassment and, depending on the severity, may not respond well to teeth whitening treatment. Porcelain veneers can be crafted to any shade of white to create a bright, white smile for even the deepest stained teeth.
  • Gaps between teeth: Gaps between teeth can be easily closed with porcelain veneers.
  • Minor chips and fractures: Porcelain veneers can be used to mask small chips or fractures to restore the shape and appearance of teeth while preventing further damage.
  • Undersized or oversized teeth: Teeth that appear too small or too large can be corrected and resized with porcelain veneers.
  • Misshaped teeth: The appearance of jagged or otherwise misshaped teeth can be improved with custom-made porcelain veneers.
  • Mild misalignment: Porcelain veneers can be used to correct mild misalignment when used as instant orthodontics.
